2. The Health Perks of Coffee

Drinking coffee is not just about staying awake and making it part of your daily routine. It’s also packed with health benefits. Moderate coffee consumption can reduce the risk of heart disease, improve mental focus, and potentially prolong your life. So, not only does it keep you alert during those early morning school runs or late-night baby feeds, but it also contributes to your overall well-being.

  1. Reduced Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Studies suggest that regular coffee consumption may lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in men.
  2. Lowered Risk of Stroke: Moderate coffee intake has been associated with a reduced risk of stroke in men, possibly due to its positive effects on blood circulation.
  3. Enhanced Physical Performance: Caffeine increases adrenaline levels, which can improve physical performance during exercise, making it an excellent pre-workout beverage.
  4. Lowered Risk of Certain Cancers: Some research indicates that men who drink coffee regularly have a decreased risk of certain cancers, including prostate cancer, one of the most common cancers among men.
  5. BUT…Did you know that coffee can contribute to back pain? Crazy right…read on…

3. Coffee Beans: Arabica vs Robusta

The first step in your coffee journey is understanding the different types of coffee beans. The two most common types are Arabica and Robusta.

Arabica beans, grown at higher altitudes, are typically more expensive and are considered superior in quality. They offer a smoother and sweeter taste with hints of sugar, fruit, and berries, and possess a pleasant aroma.

Robusta beans, on the other hand, are grown at lower altitudes and are less expensive. They have a stronger, more bitter taste with a grain-like overtone and nutty aftertaste. They also contain more caffeine than Arabica beans.

As a beginner, you might want to start with Arabica beans, known for their palatable smoothness and pleasing taste.

4. the Roast Levels: Light, Medium, and Dark

Coffee beans must be roasted before they can be brewed. The roast level significantly influences the taste of the coffee. Let’s break down the three main roast levels:

  • Light Roasts: These beans are roasted for the shortest amount of time. The resulting coffee is milder, more acidic, and retains most of the original coffee character. It’s an excellent choice for those who prefer a more ‘tea-like’ coffee experience.
  • Medium Roasts: This is a balanced level of roast, exhibiting a more pronounced body compared to light roasts. They have a balanced acidity and well-rounded flavor profile. This roast is a crowd-pleaser and a safe bet for your first coffee trial.
  • Dark Roasts: Here, the beans are roasted until they start to crackle. Dark roast coffee has a robust, intense flavor, and often reveals the flavors of the roasting process more than the bean itself. They are less acidic but richer in the body.

5. Brew Methods: Drip, French Press, and Espresso

Your chosen brewing method has a significant impact on the taste of your coffee. Here are three popular methods you can try at home:

  • Drip Coffee: This method involves pouring hot water over ground coffee beans and allowing the brew to drip slowly. This process results in a clean and straightforward cup of coffee. Oh my Oh my…This is a coffee lovers’ dream drink. This is the one I have daily as my lovely wife drips coffee on a daily basis.
  • French Press: This involves steeping coffee grounds and hot water in a beaker. After a few minutes, you press the plunger down, separating the grounds from the coffee. This method gives your coffee a robust and full-bodied flavor. Find a French Press here.
  • Espresso: This method forces hot, pressurized water through finely-ground coffee beans. It results in a concentrated coffee shot that serves as the base for many coffee drinks. This is the best option for a quick pick-me-up. It’s easy to drink and has about 35ml of liquid which makes it a fast drink. This is an acquired taste and might be too strong for the first-time drinker.

Each method requires different grind sizes, water temperatures, and brewing times, so it’s worth experimenting to find your preferred method.

The flat white originated from Australia and New Zealand and is a favorite among coffee enthusiasts. It’s similar to a latte but contains less milk, allowing the coffee flavor to shine through.

-Café au Lait

This French classic is made with equal parts of coffee and steamed milk. It’s milder in flavor compared to a latte or flat white and is a good option if you prefer less strong coffee.

If you prefer something cold, an iced coffee is a refreshing choice. It’s simply coffee served over ice. Add a splash of milk or cream to make it a more indulgent treat. This is the most popular coffee type here in Korea. Everyone has an Ice Americano in hand during hot summer days.

-Cold Brew Coffee

Cold brew is a unique method where coffee grounds are steeped in cold water for an extended period. This process results in a coffee that’s naturally sweet, smooth, and less acidic than hot-brewed coffee. This cold coffee is on a whole new level and is a must try for all the black coffee drinkers.

FAQ

The Caffè Misto, a one-to-one mix of coffee and steamed milk is a good option for beginners. It’s less intense than other coffee drinks but still offers a comforting coffee flavor.

A flavored latte, such as a vanilla or hazelnut latte, can be a good choice. The added flavors can mask the strong coffee taste, making it more palatable for someone who isn’t fond of coffee. Another idea that I’ve used often is place a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a bowl and top it with 2 espresso shots. So yummy! It’s called an affogato.

++Tip. Here in Korea, many people drink mixed instant coffee pouches. They come in a variety of flavors and might be a great option for you. You can buy some here.
