2. The Health Perks of Coffee

Drinking coffee is not just about staying awake and making it part of your daily routine. It’s also packed with health benefits. Moderate coffee consumption can reduce the risk of heart disease, improve mental focus, and potentially prolong your life. So, not only does it keep you alert during those early morning school runs or late-night baby feeds, but it also contributes to your overall well-being.

  1. Reduced Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Studies suggest that regular coffee consumption may lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in men.
  2. Lowered Risk of Stroke: Moderate coffee intake has been associated with a reduced risk of stroke in men, possibly due to its positive effects on blood circulation.
  3. Enhanced Physical Performance: Caffeine increases adrenaline levels, which can improve physical performance during exercise, making it an excellent pre-workout beverage.
  4. Lowered Risk of Certain Cancers: Some research indicates that men who drink coffee regularly have a decreased risk of certain cancers, including prostate cancer, one of the most common cancers among men.
  5. BUT…Did you know that coffee can contribute to back pain? Crazy right…read on…

3. Coffee Beans: Arabica vs Robusta

The first step in your coffee journey is understanding the different types of coffee beans. The two most common types are Arabica and Robusta.

Arabica beans, grown at higher altitudes, are typically more expensive and are considered superior in quality. They offer a smoother and sweeter taste with hints of sugar, fruit, and berries, and possess a pleasant aroma.

Robusta beans, on the other hand, are grown at lower altitudes and are less expensive. They have a stronger, more bitter taste with a grain-like overtone and nutty aftertaste. They also contain more caffeine than Arabica beans.

As a beginner, you might want to start with Arabica beans, known for their palatable smoothness and pleasing taste.

4. the Roast Levels: Light, Medium, and Dark

Coffee beans must be roasted before they can be brewed. The roast level significantly influences the taste of the coffee. Let’s break down the three main roast levels:

  • Light Roasts: These beans are roasted for the shortest amount of time. The resulting coffee is milder, more acidic, and retains most of the original coffee character. It’s an excellent choice for those who prefer a more ‘tea-like’ coffee experience.
  • Medium Roasts: This is a balanced level of roast, exhibiting a more pronounced body compared to light roasts. They have a balanced acidity and well-rounded flavor profile. This roast is a crowd-pleaser and a safe bet for your first coffee trial.
  • Dark Roasts: Here, the beans are roasted until they start to crackle. Dark roast coffee has a robust, intense flavor, and often reveals the flavors of the roasting process more than the bean itself. They are less acidic but richer in the body.

5. Brew Methods: Drip, French Press, and Espresso

Your chosen brewing method has a significant impact on the taste of your coffee. Here are three popular methods you can try at home:

  • Drip Coffee: This method involves pouring hot water over ground coffee beans and allowing the brew to drip slowly. This process results in a clean and straightforward cup of coffee. Oh my Oh my…This is a coffee lovers’ dream drink. This is the one I have daily as my lovely wife drips coffee on a daily basis.
  • French Press: This involves steeping coffee grounds and hot water in a beaker. After a few minutes, you press the plunger down, separating the grounds from the coffee. This method gives your coffee a robust and full-bodied flavor. Find a French Press here.
  • Espresso: This method forces hot, pressurized water through finely-ground coffee beans. It results in a concentrated coffee shot that serves as the base for many coffee drinks. This is the best option for a quick pick-me-up. It’s easy to drink and has about 35ml of liquid which makes it a fast drink. This is an acquired taste and might be too strong for the first-time drinker.

Each method requires different grind sizes, water temperatures, and brewing times, so it’s worth experimenting to find your preferred method.

6. Great Coffee Options

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s check out some of the best cups of coffee for beginners…

Cafe Lattes are good options for new coffee drinkers or the coffee snob. It’s a shot of espresso topped with steamed milk, resulting in a creamy and not overly strong coffee. Latte lovers come in all shapes and genders. It’s one of the most popular beverages at local coffee shops.

A cappuccino is similar to a latte but contains equal parts of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. The foam on top acts as an insulator to keep your coffee hot for longer.

-Flat White

The flat white originated from Australia and New Zealand and is a favorite among coffee enthusiasts. It’s similar to a latte but contains less milk, allowing the coffee flavor to shine through.

-Café au Lait

This French classic is made with equal parts of coffee and steamed milk. It’s milder in flavor compared to a latte or flat white and is a good option if you prefer less strong coffee.

-Iced Coffee

If you prefer something cold, an iced coffee is a refreshing choice. It’s simply coffee served over ice. Add a splash of milk or cream to make it a more indulgent treat. This is the most popular coffee type here in Korea. Everyone has an Ice Americano in hand during hot summer days.

-Cold Brew Coffee

Cold brew is a unique method where coffee grounds are steeped in cold water for an extended period. This process results in a coffee that’s naturally sweet, smooth, and less acidic than hot-brewed coffee. This cold coffee is on a whole new level and is a must try for all the black coffee drinkers.

-Caramel Macchiato

The caramel macchiato is a sweet and creamy coffee drink. It’s made with vanilla-flavored steamed milk, a shot of espresso, and topped with caramel sauce. It’s a delightful treat for those who have a sweet tooth.

7. For the Dads Who Prefer Non-Coffee Drinks

If you’ve tried and decided that coffee isn’t for you, worry not! Coffee shops offer a range of non-coffee drinks that you might enjoy.

  • Chai Tea: A combination of spiced tea and steamed milk, offering a warming and comforting drink.
  • Hot Chocolate: A classic choice, perfect for those who prefer a sweet and creamy beverage.
  • Matcha Latte: Made by mixing matcha green tea powder with steamed milk, it’s a good alternative if you’re looking for a caffeine boost without coffee.
  • Herbal Tea: A nice hot cup of tea is another good choice for non-coffee drinkers. I wrote an article for the dads out there about tea drinking… Read up~

8. Coffee-Making Equipment

To make coffee at home, you’ll need the following equipment:

  • Coffee Maker or French Press: These are the most common tools for brewing coffee at home.
  • Coffee Grinder: A grinder is crucial for brewing fresh coffee. It allows you to grind your coffee beans just before brewing, which can dramatically improve the taste of your coffee. Get your ‘Grind on‘ here.
  • Kitchen Scale: A scale helps you measure the exact amount of coffee and water, ensuring a consistent brew every time. Get a great scale here.
  • Brika!: You can email me at [email protected] and thank me. This little espresso maker will make all your parenting worries and anxieties melt away.

9. Coffee Tips for Beginners

  • Always use fresh coffee beans and grind them just before brewing.
  • Use clean, filtered water for brewing.
  • Follow the “Golden Ratio” of coffee to water, which is 1:15-18 (1 gram of coffee to 15-18 milliliters of water).
  • Experiment with different beans, roasts, and brewing methods to find what you enjoy the most.
  • ++But honestly, don’t overthink things.

Get your ‘Sip’ On.

Embarking on a coffee journey is a rewarding experience. From selecting coffee beans to brewing your first cup, you’ll gain a new appreciation for this beloved beverage. So, dads, next time you’re at the coffee shop, don’t hesitate to ask the barista about their beans and brewing methods. Enjoy the journey, sip by sip!

The Caffè Misto, a one-to-one mix of coffee and steamed milk is a good option for beginners. It’s less intense than other coffee drinks but still offers a comforting coffee flavor.

A flavored latte, such as a vanilla or hazelnut latte, can be a good choice. The added flavors can mask the strong coffee taste, making it more palatable for someone who isn’t fond of coffee. Another idea that I’ve used often is place a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a bowl and top it with 2 espresso shots. So yummy! It’s called an affogato.

++Tip. Here in Korea, many people drink mixed instant coffee pouches. They come in a variety of flavors and might be a great option for you. You can buy some here.

Sure there are so many different coffees I failed to mention here but I added the ones that I’m sure you would appreciate without going overboard. I’ve also mentioned the Brika Moka Pot a few times here because it’s an out-of-the-box idea that you can buy on Amazon and it’ll serve you for years to come.
